Russia’s main opposition leader Alexei Navalny has announced that he is breaking his fast in prison. The critic of President Vladimir Putin agreed to eat on Friday after a 24-day hunger strike. News from the BBC.
Hours before breaking the fast, his personal physicians in prison asked him to eat to save his life and health. On March 31, Navalny went on a hunger strike to demand better medical care.
Navalny wrote in an Instagram post that doctors had seen him twice and that “I am ending my hunger strike as conditions improve.” He added that the process would be slow.
Navalny’s doctors warned earlier this week that he could die at any time. On Thursday, they again warned that more hunger strikes would cause him serious harm and push him to his death.
Navalny was receiving medical treatment in Berlin after being infected with a neurotransmitter in Siberia. In this incident he went into a coma. He was arrested shortly after returning to Russia in January.
