Another Covid hospital in India caught fire. At least 18 patients died in a fire at a private Covid hospital in the western coastal state of Gujarat after midnight on Friday. Police fear the death toll could rise further. The media reported on NDTV.
About 50 patients were being treated at Patel Welfare Covid Hospital, officials said. The fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital around 12:30 pm on Friday.
According to a local media report, 24 patients were being treated in the ICU. Initially the locals rescued a few patients. The fire service came to the spot. A few more were rescued and sent to local hospitals. The fire came under control within an hour.
Initially, Bharuch Superintendent of Police Rajendrasinh Chudasama told ANI that at least 12 patients had died while undergoing treatment in Covid ward. I will be able to say the actual number in the morning.
He also feared that the death toll could rise further. That fear is true. A police official told PTI on Saturday morning, “As of 6:30 am, 18 people had been killed. We had news of 12 deaths immediately after the fire broke out.
Initially, the fire service estimated that the hospital caught fire due to a short circuit. A full investigation has been assured to look into the real cause. However, questions are being raised as to why various Corona hospitals in Gujarat have caught fire more than once.
