The Afghan army has been waging an offensive against the Taliban since US forces seized the bases. So far, 62 Taliban have been killed in the operations.

The Afghan government said in a statement that at least 72 Taliban militants had been killed in a series of raids on a key base in Helmand province. Forty members of the government forces also lost their lives in these operations.
Fawad Aman, a spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, said Afghan forces had carried out successful operations against the Taliban without the help of foreign troops. In the last 24 hours, 62 Taliban fighters have been killed and 58 wounded.
